FAQ’s
One Anchorage is a grassroots movement made up of everyday Alaskans, LGBT, faith, political business, labor, and minority community leaders. We come from all walks of life but share a common goal: to secure the exact same legal protections for gay and transgender Alaskans that we already provide to women, minorities and others through the One Anchorage Initiative on the April 3, 2012 Municipality of Anchorage ballot.
The One Anchorage Initiative simply provides to gay and transgender Alaskans the same legal protections that we already provide to other persons in Anchorage in employment, financial practices, housing, and restaurants, department stores and other businesses. More →
Right now in Anchorage there are no federal, state, or local laws of any kind protecting people from being unfairly fired or refused an interview because of their sexual orientation or transgender identity. In Anchorage, a woman can be fired solely because her employer believes she is a lesbian – for reasons having nothing to do with her job performance. A family headed by a responsible tenant with a perfect credit history could be kicked out of their home in a large apartment building – just because someone in the family were gay. More →
The Municipality of Anchorage already has a system in place for investigating conduct that violates the legal protections we all depend on. The Anchorage Equal Rights Commission has many years of experience and success in working with individuals and businesses to fairly and efficiently protect Alaskans from unfair treatment that has nothing to do with someone’s ability to do the job, or their qualifications as a tenant or business customer. Religious freedom is an important American value protected by the First Amendment to the US Constitution and Section 1.4 of the Alaska Constitution.
Proposition 5 - One Anchorage Initiative contains explicit language affirming all individuals’ religious beliefs: More →
The current Anchorage Equal Rights Code and Fair Housing Act contain special protections that recognize the needs of those renting rooms in four-plex or smaller buildings, or for room shares in private homes, housing run by a religious organization, or rentals by churches, synagogues, or private clubs.
These provisions remain unchanged by Proposition 5 – One Anchorage Initiative.
The Proposition 5 – One Anchorage Initiative protects Alaskans who live, work and shop in Anchorage, from unequal treatment on the basis of sexual orientation.
It’s important to note that ALL Alaskans would be protected from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation – no more and no less. Straight people are protected the same as gay, lesbian and bisexual people. More →
Proposition 5 - One Anchorage Initiative will not change the way in which businesses, restaurants, employers or other public places conduct their business. More →
Proposition 5 - One Anchorage Initiative will not change the way in which businesses, restaurants, employers or other public places provide restroom facilities for use by the public.
Proposition 5 – One Anchorage Initiative contains language which states:
Notwithstanding any provision of this chapter, employers or operators of public accommodations may maintain and enforce gender-segregated restrooms.
Restaurants, stores, or employers that provide women’s and men’s restrooms will continue to do so. More than 100 cities across America have already passed similar laws and successfully implemented them.
